Understanding Original Medicare:

Parts A and B

Original Medicare, also known as Traditional Medicare, is the foundational health insurance program provided by the federal government. It was established in 1965 to ensure that older adults and certain individuals with disabilities have access to essential healthcare services. Original Medicare is divided into two parts: Part A and Part B, each offering specific types of coverage to help meet your healthcare needs.

What is Medicare Part A?

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital care and is often referred to as “Hospital Insurance.” It helps pay for:

  • Inpatient Hospital Stays: Coverage includes semi-private rooms, meals, and general nursing care.
  • Skilled Nursing Facility Care: After a hospital stay, Part A covers rehabilitation services and skilled nursing care in a facility, though certain conditions must be met.
  • Hospice Care: Provides care for terminally ill patients, focusing on comfort and quality of life.
  • Home Health Care: Limited coverage for home health services, such as intermittent skilled nursing care and physical therapy.

Most people qualify for premium-free Part A if they or their spouse have paid Medicare taxes while working. If you are not eligible for premium-free Part A, you may still enroll, but you may need to pay a monthly premium.

What is Medicare Part B?

Medicare Part B covers outpatient care and is commonly referred to as “Medical Insurance.” It helps pay for:

  • Doctor Visits: Coverage for visits to your primary care physician and specialists.
  • Preventive Services: Screenings, vaccines, and other preventive measures to help you stay healthy.
  • Outpatient Services: Coverage for services such as lab tests, x-rays, outpatient surgeries, and emergency room visits.
  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME): Items such as wheelchairs, walkers, and oxygen equipment.
  • Mental Health Services: Outpatient mental health services, including therapy and counseling.

Unlike Part A, Medicare Part B requires a monthly premium, which is typically deducted from your Social Security benefits. The amount you pay may be higher depending on your income.

How Do Parts A and B Work Together?

Original Medicare Parts A and B work together to provide comprehensive coverage for a wide range of healthcare services. While Part A covers inpatient services, Part B focuses on outpatient care. However, Original Medicare does not cover all healthcare costs. For example, it does not typically include coverage for prescription drugs, dental, vision, or hearing services. Many beneficiaries choose to supplement their Original Medicare coverage with additional plans, such as Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) or Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans.
