With measles outbreaks currently occurring in the U.S., it’s more important than ever to ensure you have immunity. Whether you are approaching Medicare eligibility, already on Medicare, or caring for an aging loved one, staying informed about recommended vaccinations can help protect your health. If you’re unsure whether you need a measles booster shot, this guide will help you understand the recommendations and how Medicare may cover the cost.

Who Needs a Measles Booster?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), certain groups should consider getting the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine to ensure they are fully protected:

People Born Before 1957

Most individuals born before 1957 are assumed to have natural immunity because measles was widespread during their childhood. However, health-care workers in this age group who cannot provide proof of immunity should consider getting vaccinated.

Seniors and Adults Unsure of Their Immunization Status

If you have never been vaccinated or don’t have written documentation of your immunization status, you should receive at least one dose of the MMR vaccine. The CDC recommends that certain groups receive two doses, spaced at least 28 days apart. These groups include:

  • Health-care workers
  • Women of childbearing age before pregnancy
  • Anyone traveling internationally (ages 6 months and older)

Adults Vaccinated Before 1968

If you received a measles vaccine before 1968, you may need a booster. Some individuals were given an inactivated (killed) measles vaccine, which was later found to be less effective. If you’re unsure whether you received the inactivated version, talk to your doctor about revaccination. Those at low risk may need one dose, while high-risk individuals may require two doses.
