Does Medicare Cover Weight Loss Drugs?

For many seniors, managing weight is an important part of maintaining overall health. Whether it’s for improving mobility, reducing the risk of chronic conditions, or simply feeling better day-to-day, weight loss can be a key component of a healthy lifestyle. But does Medicare cover weight loss drugs?

Original Medicare and Weight Loss Drug Coverage

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) does not cover prescription weight loss drugs. While Medicare does provide coverage for certain preventive services related to obesity—such as screenings and counseling for individuals with a high body mass index (BMI)—it does not extend to medications prescribed specifically for weight loss.

Many prescription weight loss drugs are available to help individuals manage obesity, particularly for those with related health conditions. Some of the most prescribed medications include GLP-1 receptor agonists such as Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound, and Mounjaro. However, Medicare does not classify these medications as medically necessary treatments, meaning they are not covered under Original Medicare.

However, Medicare does cover bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass, in certain cases. To qualify, the procedure must be deemed medically necessary, typically for individuals with severe obesity and related health conditions like diabetes or heart disease. Coverage is determined based on strict eligibility criteria, and patients may need to undergo counseling or behavioral therapy as part of the approval process.

Does Medicare Cover Weight Loss Programs?

In addition to weight loss drugs, Medicare does not cover structured weight loss programs, meal plans, or commercial weight loss services. However, beneficiaries may still have access to support through other avenues, such as behavioral therapy for obesity, which is covered under Medicare Part B when provided by a qualified healthcare professional.

Medicare Advantage and Wellness Benefits

While Original Medicare does not cover weight loss drugs or programs, some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans may offer wellness benefits that support overall health and fitness. These benefits can vary by plan but may include:

  • Gym memberships
  • Fitness classes designed for seniors
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Weight management coaching

Medicare Advantage plans may also cover bariatric surgery, but approval is often subject to prior authorization, and coverage decisions can vary. These plans tend to have stricter guidelines, and some requests may be denied.

If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, it’s a good idea to check with your plan provider to see what wellness benefits and medical procedures may be available to you.

Exploring Other Options

If you are looking for support with weight management, there may be other resources available. Some community health initiatives may offer discounts on weight loss programs or medications. Additionally, speaking with your doctor about lifestyle changes, diet, and exercise can be a helpful step in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
