When is the best time to buy a Medicare Supplement/Medigap Policy?
Signing up for Part B triggers your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period (OEP), which lasts six months starting with your Part B effective date.
- Example: If your Part B effective date is June 1, you have until November 1 to sign up for a Medicare Supplement/Medigap Policy.
During your initial OEP, you can buy any Medigap policy sold in your state. Even if you have health problems, your policy will not be underwritten, and you will not be required to answer any health questions.
During your Medigap OEP, companies cannot do the following:
- Refuse to sell you any Medigap policy they offer.
- Make you wait for coverage (there can be a waiting period for pre-existing conditions if you do not have creditable coverage before the OEP).
- Charge more because of a past/present health problem.
You can still apply for Medicare Supplement coverage after your open enrollment period, but you will have to pass medical underwriting, unless you’re eligible for guaranteed issue considerations due to a special situation.
