Medicare Enrollment

You are eligible for Medicare upon turning 65, however, when you enroll depends on if you plan to continue to work past your 65th birthday and if you still have health insurance through your employer.

  • Currently on Social Security: If you are receiving social security retirement benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B beginning in the month that you turn 65 (or the previous month if your birthday is on the first day of the month).
  • Disabled: If you are disabled, you will receive coverage under Medicare Parts A and B starting 24 months after your disability benefits from Social Security begin at the beginning of the 25th month.
  • ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease): If you have ALS, you will be automatically enrolled the month Social Security Disability benefits begin.
  • At least three months before you enroll, go online to www.ssa.gov or visit your local Social Security office.
  • Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778)
  •  If you worked for a railroad, call the RRB at 1-877-772-5772.
  • Complete an Application for Enrollment in Part B (CMS-40B).
    • You must already have Part A to apply for Part B.

If you work past 65 and still have coverage through your employer, you may not need to sign up for Part B. An expert can help you decide on the best course of action depending on your goals, lifestyle and the cost of your current coverage.

If your employer coverage is considered “creditable” – meaning it meets a minimum standard set by Medicare – you can delay your Part B enrollment. You will have the opportunity to sign up for Medicare later when you lose your employer coverage.

Unlike Parts A&B, you will not be automatically enrolled into a Part D drug plan. You will need to decide whether to get drug coverage through a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) or a Medicare Advantage Plan.

This is where a Medicare expert can help you review your options and make the best decision for you.

A Medicare expert can help you decide which plan is best for you and help you sign up. Schedule a time to talk with an expert.
